The Old Royals

Old Royals are a rock and roll band. We write our songs with quiet little acoustics, then play them loudly with distorted electrics and hearty drums. Everyone in the band partakes in their own musical musings and brings them all together like a spicy pot of jambalaya. We enjoy the glories (and despair) of recording all of our own music, but its worth it because we do what we want. All band members are down for delicious beer, good honest music, and raging basement jam sessions. Old Royals look forward to raging every venue like its our very own basement. With one EP down, our full-length album will be released for the coming new year. Old Royals don't know much, but they know they love you.

Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez

This queen of blue-eyed rock n’ soul, who grew up loving equally the sweetness of a Memphis horn line and the raunch of an electric guitar riff, whether played by Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, or Pop Staples, teased her blonde hair into a beehive in honor of Ronnie Spector and never looked back, picking up a guitar and forging a career as a songwriter in the process. She’s the current, long-time vocalist with the Saturday Night Live Band, whose latest CD, 2010’s The Deep End, was honored on five national Top Ten lists and features special guests/duet partners Ian Hunter, Dion DiMucci, and Marshall Crenshaw, plus Levon Helm, GE Smith, Andy York, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Catherine Russell, Big Al Anderson, and others.

Allegra Levy Band featuring Sean Clapis

Most jazz vocalists sing standards. Allegra Levy writes her own. From the plaintive title track of her brazenly autobiographical debut album, Lonely City, to the haunting strains of its intricate closing ballad, "The Duet," the 24-year-old New York-based vocalist and composer has penned a lyrical collection of 11 harmonically adventurous-yet-familiar originals steeped in the tradition of the Great American Songbook.

A West Hartford native, Levy – currently the resident jazz singer in the Hong Kong Four Seasons hotel – returns home for one night only to celebrate in concert the release of her first CD, due out Nov. 10 from SteepleChase Lookout.

She will be joined by Hartford native Sean Clapis on guitar, Timothy Norton (originally from West Hartford) on bass, Matt Rousseau of Southbury on drums, and New York-based pianist Sean McCluskey.

Levy first honed her musical skills at Hall High School, where she was a regular soloist with the concert jazz band. She later graduated from New England Conservatory in Boston. In 2008, she made her international debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and has since cut her teeth in assorted New York clubs including Tomi Jazz, Somethin' Jazz, and The Flatiron Room, as well as at Black-Eyed Sally's.

"This is a mature first recording by a singer you're sure to hear more from," says renowned trumpeter John McNeil, who produced the album. "The tunes are catchy and well-constructed, and you'll probably find yourself singing them in a short time. I sing them still."

Popa Chubby

Popa Chubby, born Ted Horowitz in 1960, is a native son of The Big Apple. His parents owned a candy store in the Bronx. The young Chubby would play the jukebox endlessly listening to the hits of the day. Motown, Stax Volt, Chess and Atlantic records spun endlessly through the young boy’s head. “The defining moment came when my Dad took me to see Chuck Berry when I was 6. There’s Chuck, onstage, larger than life. I see a bulge in his pocket and ask my dad what it is. ‘That’s Chuck’s money,’ my dad said. I was sold on the spot.”
At 14 he got his first guitar and never looked back. The 70′s were fertile ground with blues rock ruling the Arenas. Chubby, fueled by Led Zepplin, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, Foghat, Cream and the Rolling Stones would put in long hours with his record player learning the licks that would become his signature.
In the late 70’s Popa answered an ad for a guitarist in the Village Voice and became a mainstay of the early CBGB’s Punk scene. He played, recorded, and toured with Punk godfather Richard Hell becoming an in demand session player on the New York scene.
In 1993, after winning first place in the KLON National Blues Talent Search (runner up was Keb Mo),he signed a deal with the Sony’s O-KEH label and made the record “Booty And The Beast” with legendary Atlantic Records producer Tom Dowd at the helm. The record yielded a Billboard top 100 hit with “Sweet Goddess Of Love And Beer.” Chubby was on his way. After the birth of his twin daughters, Theodora and Tipitina, he began to tour the world. Popa Chubby became a mainstay on the European festival scene where he has headlined such notable festivals as The Nice Jazz Festival, Freewheels Festival, Bos Pop Festival, The Kolne Rhythm and Blues Festival, The Montreal Jazz Festival, The New York State Blues Festival, and many more.
Chubby continued to tour relentlessly and Garnered a W. C. Handy award for his 9/11 inspired “Somebody Let The Devil Out,” a tribute to the first responders in the great tragedy.

Popa Chubby is an artist who stands for musical and personal integrity. Audiences worldwide all say the same thing:

“This is the best show I have ever seen!”

Misty Blues

Band founder and lead singer, Gina Coleman, entered the music scene in the early 90’s as the lead singer of the folk/rock group Cole-Connection. It wasn’t until 1999 when she played a gospel singer in the Williamstown Theatre Festival production of A Raisin In The Sun that she was steered down the path of blues. The lead actor in the production, Rubin Santiago-Hudson, told Coleman that he felt her voice was well suited to sing classic blues. This sentiment was echoed by actor/singer, Mandy Patinkin, who sought her out after seeing the opening performance of the production. After actress Gwyneth Paltrow commented on her performance, Coleman knew a musical shift was imminent. Guitarist Jason Webster and bassist Bill Patriquin from Cole-Connection were on board and thus began Misty Blues.
With a deficit of blues music in the Berkshires at the time, they felt the musical change would be well received. Misty Blues pays homage to the older blues made popular by the bold and brassy women of its time, while still paying respect to classic male artists of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. The band hasn’t completely abandoned their musical roots; they frequently perform classic rock and folk tunes infused with a healthy dose of the blues. Over the years, Misty Blues has produced four albums, Electric Juke Joint features classic blues renditions, Roadhouse Revival is a danceable twist on traditional gospel music, Between The Stacks their completely original album with Charles Neville on sax, and With All Due Respect which pays homage to some of the earliest blues music ever written. The core members are Gina Coleman, Jason Webster, Bill Patriquin, Jeff Dudziak, Benny Kohn and Rob Tatten. The band has been fortunate enough to perform with some great musicians in the Berkshires and beyond including Charles Neville, of the legendary Neville Brothers, Matt Berger, Aaron Dean, Jake Keplinger and Dave Vittone.

Selwyn Birchwood Band

Selwyn Birchwood, Florida’s rising young blues fireball, is a guitar and lap-steel-playing bundle of pure energy. He delivers his original songs with a revival tent preacher’s fervor and a natural storyteller’s charisma made all the more impactful by his raw, unvarnished vocals. Birchwood plays high-octane blues – at once deeply rooted, funky and up-to-the-minute – with true passion and honest emotion. With his band feeding off his drive and exuberance, the striking 6’3” 29-year-old with his trademark Afro roams the stage (often barefoot), ripping out memorable guitar licks with ease. His ability to win over an audience – any audience – is proven night after night on the bandstand. With his warm, magnetic personality, Birchwood is as down-to-earth as his music is fun, thought-provoking and vital. His mission is to spread his music far and wide, to share his joy, to play his heart out, and to push the blues into the future. “There’s nothing I’d rather be doing than playing the blues,” he says. “And I try to convey that with every song and with every performance.”

"A powerhouse player and emotive performer…his band, his material and both his skilled guitaring and soulful vocals are the essence of fully-formed. Birchwood is a major player. Highly recommended."
--Rolling Stone

"Selwyn Birchwood is an indelibly modern and original next-generation bluesman; his tough vocals, guitar and lap steel touch on classic Chicago blues, Southern soul and boogie."  --Washington Post

"Watch out for Selwyn Birchwood…a genius revelation and a pleasure. Roaring Fender Strat and down-south lap steel guitar."  --Blues Matters

"Selwyn Birchwood is making waves, surprising people and defying expectations. Be on the lookout. He revels in the unexpected." --Living Blues
